The Mountain
I had a vision
that we are all climbing a mountain
I was given a map by a great traveler
who made it to the top and came back down
to show everyone the way up
Yet, even with the map in my hand
there are times when I don’t know how to read it
and had to find someone who knows to explain it to me
There are times when I forget to refer to it
and end up walking the wrong way
not even knowing that it’s wrong
There are times when I try to follow the directions
but get distracted by the scenery and wander off the path instead
in pursuit of those temporal delights
There are also times when I see other travelers walking another way
and without thinking, I call out to them
telling them that they are wrong
Not realizing that they could be holding different maps
and walking different paths
that may bring them to the top anyway
And in the end, I’m the one who was stopped in my tracks
by my own obsession about other people
forgetting that they have their own journey,
and I, my own
But as I walk along my path
I am happy to have fellow travelers join me
The company always makes the travelling interesting
even though sometimes it is easier to walk alone
I look forward to the time when I will reach the top of the mountain
where I will see other people who have also arrived
Some whom I will know, others whom I do not know yet
Nobody will ask, “So how did you arrive?
By car or on foot? By this route or that?”
and nobody will argue that his or her path is the best
But everyone will be happy to see one another
and greet one another with warm hugs and smiles like long-lost brothers and sisters
and then sit together at the top of the mountain
enjoying the beautiful scenery
in perfect peace and joy as long as eternity
Until some feel that the scenery is so beautiful
that it must be shared by everyone
and thus decide to walk back down the mountain
to share with other travelers their way of going up the mountain
